HOW MANY
Para entender a diferença entre how much e how many , vamos começar pelo significado de “many”.
“Many” significa “muitos” ou “muitas” e é utilizado para coisas contáveis. As coisas contáveis são substantivos que podem ser contados um a um. Tudo que é contável pode ser separado por quantidade.
Por exemplo, você consegue contar uma maçã, duas maçãs, três maçãs, mas não consegue contar um arroz, dois arroz, três arroz. Portanto, maçãs são contáveis e arroz é incontável.
Exemplos de substantivos contáveis:
I bought many apples. (Comprei muitas maçãs)
He found many books in the drawer. (Ele achou muitos livros na gaveta)
If I had money, I’d buy many cars. (Se eu tivesse dinheiro, eu compraria muitos carros)
Você viu que todos os substantivos contáveis são pluralizados, certo? Assim, se uma palavra tem plural em inglês, ela é contável. Essa é uma das chaves da diferença entre how much e how many.
O “How many” carrega essa função de perguntar pela quantidade de algo que é contável, mas no papel de pergunta, de interrogação.

“Much” também significa “muito”, mas para as coisas incontáveis. Se não temos quantidade definida, usamos sempre “much”. Esse ponto é fundamental para compreender a diferença entre how much e how many.
O mesmo se aplica para o “how much”, que é utilizado em perguntas sobre a quantidade daquilo que não está dividido por unidades ou outras formas de contagem, ou seja, para substantivos incontáveis.
Os incontáveis geralmente falam de líquidos, metais, grãos, sentimentos, sensações e outras coisas abstratas.
Exemplo de substantivos incontáveis:
There was so much water on the floor. (TInha tanta água no chão)
Did get much sleep? (Você dormiu muito?)
Don’t eat much rice. (Não coma muito arroz)
Ao contrário de substantivos contáveis, os incontáveis não tem plural. Para pluralizá-los temos que colocar o container no qual eles estão. Então, ‘water’ é incontável, porém “bottles of water” é contável.
Quando queremos perguntar “quanto”, usamos “how much”. Essa expressão também é usada para perguntar por preços.
